Montessori observation notes are short, dated records of what a child did with the work. They are the raw layer under progress states and portfolios. If the note is vague, the rest of the record is guesswork.
The shape of a useful note
- When. Date and, if it matters, time of day.
- What. The material or the moment — pink tower, pouring, a social exchange at the snack table.
- How. Independence, concentration, repetition, help asked or refused, self-correction.
- Not why— unless you label interpretation separately. "Avoided the material" is observation. "Isn't ready" is a conclusion.
What to leave out
Mood summaries, comparisons to other children, and language you would not read aloud to a family. "Had a great morning" does not tell anyone which work happened. For tone and phrasing, use the Montessori observation examples and the longer how-to write guide.
From note to progress
A note that names the material can support a Presented, Working, or Mastered update. A series of dated notes is how you know the state actually moved. See Presented, Working, Mastered. Paper or digital
